The Bowelbabe Fund Consultant and Fellow roles now in post at The Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital

In the Autumn of 2024 we committed to funding two roles within Professor David Cunningham's team at the Royal Marsden.
The GI Consultant has been in post since January 2025 and we're pleased to be supporting Hazel Lote. Hazel has worked closely with Professor Cunningham for many years and has a very strong research background, having spent time at the Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden. We'll be funding Hazel until 2030.
She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Cambridge and her clinical training at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, qualifying in 2008. Her oncology training was based at The Royal Marsden Hospital, where she was awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in 2012 and an NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureship in 2021. She gained her PhD in 2021 from the Institute of Cancer Research at the University of London.
In 2023, she was appointed Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology in the Gastrointestinal Unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital. In 2024, she was appointed Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Royal Marsden.

After an intensive recruitment process we're now pleased to announced that Alicia Lefas took on the Bowelbabe Research Fellow role in September 2025. She is a highly motivated and dedicated clinician with a proven aptitude for research. Dr Lefas obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Oncology from the ICR, an MSc with distinction in Cancer and Clinical Oncology from Queen Mary University, and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Southampton. She has undertaken her clinical training at The Royal Marsden in the GI Unit, the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, West Middlesex University Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital. She is passionate about patient care and committed to involving patients and the public in clinical research. By undertaking this research fellowship, her ultimate goal is to contribute to research that translates into tangible benefits for patients, providing them with more effective treatments and enhancing their quality of life. We'll be funding Alicia until 2027.
Dr Lote and Dr Lefas look forward to working together to develop and deliver early phase clinical trials to identify new drugs and increase the efficacy of existing treatments for GI cancer patients to give more people more time with the people they love.​
